Rouen City Info

Rouen Hotels

Rouen is the historical capital city of Normandy, in northwestern France, and presently the capital of the Upper Normandy région. rouen france was once one of the largest and most prosperous cities of medieval Europe, france rouen was the seat of the Exchequer of Normandy in the Middle Ages. It was one of the capitals of the Anglo-Norman dynasties, which ruled both England and large parts of modern France from the 11th century to the 15th century. The city proper has a population of 106,592.

The rouen france is a centre of industry and commerce, fifth largest port in France and the closest one to Paris. Rouen is split, into a right and left bank area by the River Seine. rouen is also one of France’s most historic cities; William the Conqueror died here in 1087 and in 1431 it was the stage for the trial and execution of Joan of Arc. She was burned at the stake in the Old Marketplace, the position is still marked by a huge bronze cross. Allied bombing largely destroyed the rouen city; all of its bridges and many of its great churches were ruined. However extensive investment has been concentrated on restoring parts of the city to its former medieval glory. The great Cathédrale Notre-Dame, immortalized by Monet, remained fairly unscathed and is well worth a visit for its wonderful stonework. france rouen has interesting Chapelle de la Vierge, where the heart of Richard the Lion-Heart is entombed as a token of his affection for the people of Rouen.
Rouen france functions as the port of Paris, handling an enormous volume of traffic. Among its many manufactures are metal products, chemicals, drugs, textiles, paper, and leather goods. Rouen is also an old commercial, administrative, and cultural center. Rouen france has some excellent museums and churches which one can visit and a flea market on Sunday gives you the opportunity to get a bargain and soak up the Normandy ambience.
