The town got its name from "kemper", denoting the junction of the two rivers, the Steir and the Odet, around which are the cobbled streets, of the medieval period, dominated by the cathedral nearby.

After getting engrossed in the river Odet, let’s have a glimpse of Saint-Corentin cathedral, the cathedral dates from the 13th - 16th centuries and is both the oldest and the largest building of its type in Brittany. The facade and the stained glass windows are the two things to look out for especially.
Quimper Museum of Fine Arts (Musee des Beaux Arts) houses some of the most interesting paintings by local artists (including those from the so-called Pont-Aven school of painting); and the Museum of Breton History also has some of the intriguing exhibits about the history of the town and region. |
